Roy Wilkinson Aldrich (1869–1955) served as a Texas Ranger from 1915 until 1947. Correspondence, financial records, and legal documents to and from Archer, a Virginia native and prominent Mississippi planter and ardent secessionist, and his relatives, friends, and business associates. Balfour (William L.) Papers, 1841–1863.
Probate records of Balfour (1802–1857), North Carolina native, resident of Mississippi, and owner of plantations in several Mississippi counties, primarily contain financial records related to the management of the estate administered by Horace G. Blackman. Included are receipts, bills, and invoices for clothing and educational expenses for some of the heirs, bills and invoices for slaves, equipment, and supplies for the plantations Fall Back, Bolivar County; Homestead, Madison County; and Woodside, Yazoo County, and others; and letters concerning family matters as well as the purchase of slaves and supplies.

There always seems to be an air of anticipation walking into a new classroom on the first day of school. The atmosphere builds as the eager teacher motions students into the room, students nervously approach their new environment, and parents anxiously wave their last goodbyes before the door closes… and then what?
With 20 or so little humans staring attentively at the front of the class, the floor is yours! This is the moment to make a positive first impression, and more importantly, set the stage for the formation of a constructive classroom community. So which preschool classroom rules should you introduce to your students, and how should you approach them?
Here are a few ideas and considerations to get you started… but if you want to cut to the chase, below you can find printable rules for your use!How to Create Classroom Rules
As you prepare your lesson plan, an important factor to decide is what type of rules you would like to share with your students and how you should communicate them. Establishing these rules will help build the foundation for a strong classroom community and will support pro-social behaviorsas children begin to have a more active role in the classroom and are held accountable for their actions. You’ll want to keep your rules simple, use positive phrasing, and incorporate visuals as much as possible!Create a List

Begin by creating a list of rules that you feel are important for your students to follow. As the teacher, you set the tone and lay the foundation for the way rules should be addressed. This is your call – make it count. From your initial list, select the most important rules that you would like the children to focus on and keep them as a reference when you involve the students.Keep It Simple

Rules should be short and easy to comprehend. Keep them to a minimum by sticking to no more than 4-5 “golden” rules. By making them straightforward, you can ensure that you are communicating effectively to your students, as opposed to using complex language that can confuse your preschoolers.Use Positive Phrasing

As the saying goes, “when you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine.” Apply this to your rules, and sprinkle in the sunshine! By utilizing positive phrasing in your classroom rules, your students will be less likely to view the rules in a negative light. Instead of using phrases such as “Don’t Run” or “No Yelling,” take the approach of “Walking Feet” and “Quiet Voices.” Using this positive wording allows your students to more easily associate what they should be doing vs. what they shouldn’t be doing.

Positivity should always be a key element in the classroom environment. When enforcing the rules, do so in a positive manner. When rules are broken, gently remind children of the classroom rules poster.

The goal is never to make a child feel bad about themselves, but instead to redirect their choices and undesirable behavior. Taking the extra one-on-one time with your student will go far in building their confidence and self-esteem and work towards preventing repeat offenses.

Each week in synagogue, we read (or, more accurately, chant, because it is sung) a passage from the Torah. This passage is referred to as a parshah. The first parshah, for example, is Parshat Bereishit, which covers from the beginning of Genesis to the story of Noah. There are 54 parshahs, one for each week of a leap year, so that in the course of a year, we read the entire Torah (Genesis to Deuteronomy) in our services. During non-leap years, there are 50 weeks, so some of the shorter portions are doubled up. We read the last portion of the Torah right before a holiday called Simchat Torah (Rejoicing in the Law), which occurs in October, a few weeks after Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year). On Simchat Torah, we read the last portion of the Torah, and proceed immediately to the first paragraph of Genesis, showing that the Torah is a circle, and never ends.

In the synagogue service, the weekly parshah is followed by a passage from the prophets, which is referred to as a haftarah. Contrary to common misconception, ’haftarah’ does not mean ’half-Torah.’ The word comes from the Hebrew root Fei-Teit-Reish and means ’Concluding Portion’. Usually, haftarah portion is no longer than one chapter, and has some relation to the Torah portion of the week.
The Torah and haftarah readings are performed with great ceremony: the Torah is paraded around the room before it is brought to rest on the bimah (podium). The reading is divided up into portions, and various members of the congregation have the honor of reciting a blessing over a portion of the reading. This honor is referred to as an aliyah (literally, ascension).
The first aliyah of any day’s reading is reserved for a kohein, the second for a Levite, and priority for subsequent aliyot are given to people celebrating major life events, such as marriage or the birth of a child. In fact, a Bar Mitzvah was originally nothing more than the first aliyah of a boy who had reached the age to be permitted such an honor. Celebrants of life events are ordinarily given the last aliyah, which includes blessing the last part of the Torah reading as well as blessing the haftarah reading. The person given this honor is referred to as the maftir, from the same root as haftarah, meaning ’the one who concludes.’

Jewish scriptures are sometimes bound in a form that corresponds to this division into weekly readings. Scriptures bound in this way are generally referred to as a chumash. The word ’chumash’ comes from the Hebrew word meaning five, and refers to the five books of the Torah. Sometimes, a chumash is simply refers to a collection of the five books of the Torah. But often, a chumash contains the entire first five books, divided up by the weekly parshiyot, with the haftarah portion for each week inserted immediately after the week’s parshah.
Below is a table of the regular weekly scriptural readings. Haftarot in parentheses indicate Sephardic ritual where it differs from Ashkenazic. The following paper is a reflection of weeks one’s discussion questions topics. Week one’s topics were fair employment laws and unions and nonunion organizations. With each of the topics came comforts and struggles for each of the team members. In addition to the comforts and struggles the team discussed how the topics relate to the workplace.

Guided Reading WorkbookAfter the discussion that was completed in Learning Team C’s main forum, there were two topics that was somewhat a struggle but yet learning experience as well. The two topics were: the amazement of just how many employment laws there are for a human resource manager to understand and implement and some of the points of views from classmates referring to the subject of union membership.
Chapter 3 discussed many employment laws. From the equal pay act, the family and medical leave act, the American disabilities act, to the age discrimination act, the human resource management, as well as the employee, must understand how each act pertains to the organization. Some of the teammates were concerned with the subject of downsizing and how it seems like the first employees to get laid off are the ones who are middle-age or higher. The chapter explained the act thoroughly. “This act prohibits discrimination in pay, benefits or continued employment for employees age 40 and over. A key objective of the law is to prevent financially troubled companies from singling out older employees when there are cutbacks. If a company claims the layoffs were based on factors other than age, such as performance criteria, the employer bears the burden of proving that its policy was in fact based on those non-age factors.”(Cascio, W. 2010). This provided some comfort as there needs to be proof before a company can just lay-off someone 40 or over.

This National Leadership Grant for Research Project is titled: Investigating Self-Determination Variables in Summer Reading Program Participants. This project will expand research beyond that done on reading and information in school libraries, to that of public libraries in the context of summer reading programs (SRPs). The study will explore the relationship between free voluntary reading (FVR) and middle school age participants’ perceived confidence in information skills. The study will also explore the degree to which extrinsic rewards related to literacy (bookmarks, free books etc.) are likely to have an effect on intrinsic motivation to read. Data will be collected from 12 summer reading programs in the public library systems of New York State (Onondaga County) and Ohio (Cuyahoga).
First and foremost, this project involves two library systems in NYS and Ohio. In New York State, the librarians and staff of the Onondaga County Public Library System are participating in the research while in Ohio the librarians and staff of the Cuyahoga County Public Library system are taking part both in a pilot study and in the main study. Without these individuals and their directors, this research would not be possible.
Dr. Marilyn Arnone Principal Investigator, is Associate Research Professor and Associate Professor of Practice at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and co-Director at the University’s Center for Digital Literacy. She has served as principal investigator and co-principal investigator on many federal grants including national leadership grants from IMLS.


Dr. Ruth Small, co-Principal Investigator, is Laura J. & L. Douglas Professor and Director of the School Media Program in the School of Information Studies and Founding Director of the Center for Digital Literacy at Syracuse University. She has received the AASL’s Highsmith Research Award and the ALA’s Carroll Preston Baber Research Award for her research on motivation and information literacy.
Dr. Stephen Krashen is a linguist, educational researcher, and professor emeritus at the University of Southern California. He has received the Mildenberger Award for his book on second language acquisition and learning and in 2005 was inducted into the International Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame. He will be providing input for planning and development of the intrinsic motivation to read instrument, interview protocol development and writing articles.
Mr. Thomas Hardy is President/Owner of Data Momentum in Ithaca, NY and will provide consulting on technical services for needed programming. His company will provide substantial organizational support.
